Subject: [CR]Windsor Pro Dating

While I don't have any specifics on dating Windsor Pro via serial numbers, I do recall that the orange painted models followed the first introduced silver and white models. Seem to think the orange "racier" model (i.e., shorter wheelbase with less fork rake and a different fork crown) was introduced around 1973 or 1974. Bicycling magazine did a road test of the orange model in October, 1975. Windsor also promoted their bikes with the Merckx 1972 Mexico hour record, although we all know Eddy was riding a Colnago built bike, not a Windsor.

My silver Windsor Profesional has a "703" serial number along with the long chainstays and ample fork rake (what a nice riding bike!!!), and I believe it to be a 1972 model year. Has the Universal centerpulls that are shown mounted on the Windsor catalog photo, however sidepulls may have been used also on these model years (at least some other CR list members have stated their Pros have sidepulls).

Here's the Wool Jersey photo link in case anyone is interested in seeing my Windsor (includes catalog scans and a copy of the Windsor Merckx hour record ad on last page of this album):

Hope this proves somewhat useful. Regards, Kevin Kruger - Grantville, PA
