Pic of the Day 14th April, 2007 Sixty-Five Years Ago

After having fallen on the banking of the Parc des Princes, Gérard Virol (Mercier - Hutchinson) runs across the line to finish 10th in the 1942 Critérium National Z.O. (Occupied France) de la Route - Occupied Zone. That rim and tubular might be a bit tricky to replace in Occupied France. There were actually two separate races that day; one held in the "zone occupée" on the Saint Cloud - Paris course, and another held in the "zone non occupée" of Free France on the Marseille/St Antoine - Marseille course. Emile Idée (Alcyon - Dunlop) won the Z.O. race, ahead of Raymond Louviot (Mercier - Hutchinson) and Raymond Guegan (Dilecta). From "Le Miroir des Sports" No.52 (new series), 6th April 1942.
