Ah, Lord Vol.... er I mean The-Former-Listmember-from-Boston-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has been brought into this thread. ;-) I've dealt with Jan and found him to be friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. And he obviously devotes a great deal of time and energy towards our hobby for, what I assume, is little compensation. Steve and Chuck have forgotten more about vintage lightweights than I'll ever know. It would seem a shame if any left the List or relationships were ruptured over alloy versus steel cranks. And just for the record, I've never had a problem with Lord Vol.... er I mean The-Former-Listmember-from-Boston-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. And I'll buy all the beer in Greensboro for anyone who responds to my post yesterday about a 2nd generation Super Record rear derailleur dated 1977 or who can sell me some nice mid-1970's track stuff.

Reading all t hese posts I couldn't help but feel like a child watching his parents argue . Not that I'm a child and they are my parents, but they are three listmem bers who I hold in high regard, and I'd have a difficult time naming more than two or three others I put in the same league. I imagine they are all bristling to read this, the suggestion that they are in any common group. Too bad.

While St even pointed out an exhasuting, if not exhaustive, litany of possible gaps in Jan's research, I'm left wondering what his real attitude is. Based on the nearly endless fault-finding, I suspect that Steven might be of the opi nion that attempts at rigor are simply futile because there will always be gaps in our data. Or is he just saying that rigor is good, but what Jan pr actices is not truly rigorous.

No matter how big a rift might ha ve existed between you and Ken, I doubt very much that it has suddenly clos ed, and I would not use an expression of agreement from a man widely known to be given to extremes as evidence of your own moderation. By the time he reads this, Ken would probably attaboy Jan, with whoem he apparently disag rees strongly, simply for lashing out at me. Moreover, it has been my dire ct experience that Ken is averse to rigor when it calls into question anyth ing he believes. He is the opposite of a scientist, in my experience, and will attempt to trump any conflicting assertions with a hand-waving comibin ation of "I was there in the day, and have been at this longer than you," a nd "lighten up, you geek, it's just bikes." In some respects, I actually a ppreciate
