Subject: [CR]was part 6, now 1977 2nd gen SR rear

George,

Thanks for your constructive contribution. For the record, I subscribe to digest, so I had not read the Kostman post when I wrote mine, and mine was in no way an endorsement of his. For me, Kostman's tone put that of Jan, Steven, and all others involved right into perspective.

As for the second gen 1977 SR, I think the early date (and the perfect condition) is the reason for the high selling price. I had always thought that 1978 was the first year for the second gen unit, in addition to being the last year for the first gen.

More recently, I saw some odd examples at this site (that Chuck pointed out to the list):

http://members.jcom.home.ne.jp/my_bianchi/from1979%20sr.htm

This page shows a second gen marked 1976 (and appears to show a 1979 first gen, which I find truly bizarre). We also recently discussed on this list a 1972 first gen seen on Ebay, which is a year earlier than previously belived to be the intro date. To me, this could all just as easily suggest that the early versions of a given model may have been assembled from parts made and stamped in an previous year, rather than that part having been introduced earlier than we thought. For example, a 1972 NR upper body could easily have been black annodized, rather than clear, and used to build a first gen SR rear in 1973, or later. Ditto a 1976 upper body being initially manufactured for use in first gen production, but ending up on a second gen unit in 1978, or whenever. Of course, this wouldn't explain that apparent 1979 first gen rear.

There were some other interesting tidbits on that page, including the black anodized pulley cages. One minor thing I noticed was that the 1979 2nd gen with alloy bolts used the newer two-piece pulley spindle, while the example I have uses the older NR-style bolt.

Note on the recent Ebay 1977 second gen, that the washer on the cable clamp is not chromed. It is black oxide coated like the analogous NR part. This washer was a redesigned part (no tab) for the secind gen rear, and it appears that Campy did not decide to chrome it until after some early date.

If anyone cares....
