Regarding reduced bearing size in Zeus and Campy TI BBs:

Steel BB spindles have races that are an integral part of the spindle, whereas titanium bottom brackets have pressed-in steel races. Since the steel race is an extra part and it has to slide over the spindle diameter, there is a space crunch. There's not much room to be taken from the cups (which also have pressed-in steel races) and the axle is already reduced in stiffness by the switch to TI so reducing it's diameter doesn't seem very appealing.

One option is to make the bearings smaller.
