That is good to know.... One of the swedish guys at the Wheelmen annual meet last year had a 40's Crescent that was pretty cool

U.S. Crescent was also a big presence in Sweden,and still Is as a Swedish brand. Some of the turn of the century seat clamp sizes(19 mm) still survive from this era.Art Link,San Antonio,TX,USA

I don't doubt that, there are lots of Crescents around. I find it hard to believe they produced more bikes than Columbia though. I see many more Columbia bicycles around of that era. I would question the accuracy of the numbers.

1897 was 20 years after the beginning of the bike industry in America. Pope began importing in 1877 and manufacturing in 1878, and extorting $10 per every bike made in America until 1885.

That was my point. The Germans weren't around in the beginning.

Triggered by Marcus Hellmans reply i looked through Horstmanns book again. Crescent of Chicago was founded by german immigrants and had in 1897 an output of 110.000 cycles, making them nr.1 in the world market.
