I've been following this thread; I think that I have seen every reason given, except the most important one....The less housing there is in a braking system, the less housing compression there is; the less compression there is, the more positive the braking is.....this was definitely a 'plus' in old-timey set-ups that used unlined, round-wound cable housing. Also: if the stops are slotted, it greatly simplies periodic cable lubing. And, finally, thanks to the many who responded to my query for info about building wooden rims! Thanks to your generous sharing of your knowledge, my project is made MUCH simpler.
