Subject: [CR]Re: supersports standover

In the hope that the info will be useful to all three or four (!) of us who think that the Schwinn SuperSport of the 1970s is worth a nod, here are some measurements, all in the appropriate units (inches), for the so-called 24" model I just bought:

Standover (27*1-1/4 tires): 32 - 3/4" Seat tube, center to top of extended seat tube: 24" Seat tube, center to top of top tube: 23" top tube, center-to-center: 22" wheelbase: 40- 1/2"

It has a fillet-brazed chrome-moly frame, nicely done, but it is combined with traditional Schwinn child-proofing and maintenance reducing stuff: idiot brake levers, overshift protector on the FW, and a spoke protector, Ashtabula (1-piece) cranks with pants protector, and the hideous Schwinn Stem-Shifters.

Changing to 700c wheels would be a bit dicey, since the rear 27" rim is near the lower limit of the rather long DiaCompe-style Schwinn-Approved CP brake. Might make it with a bit of judicious filing of the slots, and a washer or two.

It's quite cherry, but I suspect the novelty value will wear off for me, since I never had one as a kid. And, not near as funky as the equally cherry Alenax that moved in with us (multi-speed pendulum-drive, like stair-stepping).
