The "Sansaxe" pedals were used in the 1950s on some French bikes. The aluminum Marcadier tandem in "The Golden Age of Handbuilt Bicycles" is equipped with them. More details of Marcadier, including the drawing from the "Data Book" with the hanging pedal that looks more like the stirrup of a horse saddle, were in Vintage Bicycle Quarterly Vol. 2, No. 3. According to the figure legend from the original Rebour drawing, the "stirrup" pedal was called "ISO."

The "Sansaxe" pedals used a cast body that appears to be rather fragile. On the Marcadier tandem, one cracked when the bike was transported in a car.

Monsieur Marcadier once told me he liked the much lower "ISO" pedals, but that they required a much higher bottom bracket and thus special frames.
