Simplex established a factory in Italy, just as a couple of decades later Campy established a factory in France, probably to avoid customs charges. I think Chuck Schmidt even has reprints of the Simplex Italian catalogs. I read somewhere, maybe The Dancing Chain, that Fausto Coppi won the Tour de France in the late 40's or early 50's using Simplex Derailleurs, and that this shocked Campagnolo into finally introducing a cable-operated RD to try to restore their pride.
