Are you sure there isn't a brazed on little rectangle on top of the down tube where the shifters might be located? Those top-of-the-bb cable guides look similar to the Gippiemme made (or at least marketed) set, they are shaped differently from the Campy style top-of-the-bb versions; shorter and "pointing" differently...?

There is a machined & black anodized piece added to the braze on which the shift levers themselves then attach to.... Rather than their normal lower position, the gear cables run more towards the top of the down tube in this system.. "Aero!"

I would suspect that this frame is from the early 80's, probably '83. Also suspect that it was a custom (possibly a team frame), rather than a stock frame, given the unusual details such as the tubes, number-tab braze-on and lack of shifter braze-ons. Serial number is somewhat consistent with early 80's frames, but there are still quite a few anomalies in Merckx frame numbering. At one time I had a custom Panasonic Team frame with a number-tab braze-on. It was essentially the same as a Corsa Extra, but without the "Corsa Extra" decal on the top tube. It's always interesting to find these "outside the norm" frames to keep us all guessing.

Just purchased what appears to be an early 80s Eddy Merckx Aero-Tubed frameset, and would appreciate assistance in accurately dating it from knowledgeable list members.

From the catalogs found on the bulgier site, it appears to be a "CORSA EXTRA" model using the cast lugs and sloping crown. The Merckx #3 bulgier catalog shows bare frames with various mixtures of frame fittings, making it tough to pin this frame down.
