I use them in headsets and BB's. I used to remove the headset retainers and add another ball bearing but what I discovered was you end up with a "flat spot". Not really flat but a space which is a little larger than the other spaces so the headset was binding ever so slightly. This was in a stand with wheel, cables, handlebars etc removed so I could spin it 360 degrees. It occured to me then that the retainer allows all the bearings to carry an equal load which seemed preferable. All that said of course, there are no retainers in my hubs and they spin smoothly.
