Subject: [CR]French pedal threads

Dear CR list, My young nephew has an early 1970's vintage 24" wheel GITANE with steel cottered crank arms and French threading. He is hoping to try clipless pedals.Kevin Kruger gave him some neat new shoes so he can try the clipless thing. We've tried Look pedals and I sent him an older set of TIME MID-57 CLIPLESS PEDALS.They don't thread in.I'm guessing the problem is FRENCH THREADING. How difficult is it to retap the STEEL CRANK ARMS TO BRITISH THREADING.I read in the ARCHIVES TO TAP FROM THE BACK. We are hoping to have a local bicycle shop in RICHMOND DO THE WORK. Is this a safe option. The crank arms are 160 mm.We really didn't want to change out the crankset. The steel cranks are your basic cottered ones. If all else fails the little guy will have to wait for the clipless option on his next "VINTAGE RIDE". Trying to get the young racer safely down the road. Right now he is using LYOTARD pedals with MOUNTAIN ZEFAL clips & NO STRAPS,for ease of entry and exit. Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks for your time! Yours truly, Marty Walsh in Vienna,Virginia,U.S.A.
