A great many frames sustained damage from over tightening on too-small posts this way: On a new bike assembly, the seatpost inserts with difficulty and/or galling (scratching) the post surface. A panicked bike assembler, or a store manager who wants to placate a scratch-neurotic customer, not knowing about adjustable reamers and/or brake cylinder hones, uses the next post diameter down and just overtightens the seatpost binder to stabilize the post. Voila--a post that fits easily and with less scratching, and a cracked seat lug ear or slot in the making. David Feldman Vancouver, WA
