So, I'm taking the Austro-Daimler Vent Noir to L'Eroica. Basically, of my classic bikes, it has the least value in the market, so I get hurt least if the airline gets revenge. At least on the way back. Besides, doesn't L'Eroica need an Austrian bike with Japanese components?
Step one is replacing the first gen D-A black crankset (too high-geared), so I put on an SR using the Stronglight 99 pattern. Sort of a compact, 28-42, and it works nicely. Next issue is the wheels. Black D/A, of course, but very narrow 27" rims, good ferrules, no decals left. Two strikes, and no balls, as they say in beisbol. Yup. But the attic has a nice pair of 700c wide Weinmanns, 36x36, on HF Campy Record hubs. My Paselas don't mate up. At about 50 psi they try to emigrate from the rim. Not a pretty picture.
Advice sought:
--> are there any modern tires that have a decent chance of holding pressure, riding well, and being in the range of "real" 28 mm or bigger?
--> If not, anyone want a pair of nice wheels on Weinmann rims(description above)? $95 + shipping, will provide year for the record hubs.
--> Or what rims would look like late 1970s, work well with modern hook-bead tires (ok, P.C.K, tyres. :-) ), and are reasonably widely available. Need not be made in Italy, but that's ok, too.
--> Or someone have a spare pair of rims or wheels that would work and want to trade?
