1934 Tour Winner Antonin Magne

In 1934 Antonin Magne took the yellow jersey on stage 2 and kept it all the way to the finish in Paris. Here's a very clear image of Magne on his yellow "l'Auto"-labeled bike (from the hubs-up). Note tape wrapped around the cable housings where they enter the levers, "MAGNE" painted on the top tube, thorn catcher on rear wheel only, and side-button collar on his yellow jersey. Can anyone explain the crab patch sew onto the jersey? From "Match l'Intran" No.415, 27 July 1934.
