Lacing was meant to pull in the sides of a trimmed down saddle and prevent it from deforming .Sometimes also accomplished with a metal fastener that went from one side to the other on the skirt. Art Link,San Antonio,TX

Did anyone happen to see this auction for the Ideale 88 saddle on the one and only eBay?

It looks like someone wove a shoe string through the perforated holes on the underside of the saddle to give it the Brooks Swallow look.

Were the perforated holes in the leather designed for pulling the leather together to give the saddle a more robust look? I do notice that I tend to get rashes on the insides of my thighs after riding old flattened leather saddles.....
