I've never broken a Campagnolo axle but I've broken a couple of Maillard axles on my Peugeot PY 10 CP, which I put down to the steel being not as good as what Campagnolo used for their axles. Interestingly the slightly later Maillard hubs on my Peugeot PRO 10 uses finer threads on the axle so that the axle is slightly larger (measured in the inner dimension of the thread 'valley'). This hub also has the dust caps attached to the edge of the bearing cones.

Oh yes... and I've seen both broken hollow axles and solid axles by the way.
