Mark,

Yes, the "12 lbs" caught my eye, too; but the asking price was the real corker, in my mind.

As I wrote to another list member this morning, the funny thing about this listing is that I bought another Italvega from a craigslist ad about a week ago that was a real find: a mid-70's 62cm Super Record in fantastic shape. It had one scraped area on the drive side chainstay, but otherwise appeared to have been virtually unused and stored inside for the last 30 years or so. It bears nearly pristine Nuovo Record components, including an unmarked 177.5mm crankset and patent 74 rear derailleur, with a Universal Super 68 brakeset and a padded Cinelli Unicanitor saddle. Chrome and paint are just about perfect. Wheels are high flange 36 hole Record hubs relaced apparently in the late 70's or early 80's onto clear anodized clincher rims.

I'm not sure (even after reviewing the archives) what the difference is between this model and the Super Speciale, but the frame looks identical to the earlier 70's Super Speciales that I've seen. It has medium blue paint over chrome with polished head lugs, seatstay caps and extremities and two bands of exposed chrome on the seat tube.

The seller was pretty much the opposite of the guy with the $4200 bike. He described the bike modestly and was reasonable about the asking price, then gave me an armload of extras with the bike including spare Mathauser brake pads and holders, a Campy "peanut butter" wrench, assorted small parts, and a pair of unidentified cycling shoes.

I need to overhaul the bottom bracket (where the old grease has gone bad) and perhaps the hubs, but that's all the work I'll have to do to this. The bar tape and brake lever hoods aren't even bad.

Kerrigan Bennett, feeling pretty lucky in Pleasant Hill, CA USA, where my wife hasn't noticed there's another bike in the garage yet.

I like his note about the dry weight being 12 lbs. I presume he means the weight of the components without the frame and forks?! More likely around 19lbs or so. By the paint color, it's not a Superlight, but a Super Speciale. Nice bike for Long Legged Louie...
