Amazing story. Maybe not so hard to understand his lack of recognition in America, however. Like the first American Formula 1 champion Phil Hill, Magnani went to Europe early in his youth and spent most of his career there, spending little time in the US. Also, of the few Americans who followed European road racing results at the time, many probably assumed a rider named Magnani riding for French and Italian teams was an Italian rather than an American.

One might have expected that Schwinn would have publicized his career more once he became a Schwinn employee, though.
