So, last night I finally got the AustroDaimler Vent Noir assembled as I want to ride it in L'Eroica. Stock (black early DuraAce, but for Phil wired-on wheels, and SR cranks that clone a Stronglight 99 triple, 86 mm BCD). So, like any good but aging CR would want to do, I rode it to work and back today. It all worked, but for one leeetle problem: Clack-clack-clack sound in back, but only in the 3rd and 4th positions of the Suntour Winner ultra-six. The noise focused the mind right smartly: pretty embarassing.

Tonight I did the experiment: checked for bent teeth, and changed it out on principle. Then I remembered something, and checked out Sutherland.

Brethen and Sistern, listen-up. Thou shalt not run Ultra-6 FW with conventional 5-speed chain. If you've forgotten this, you're due the same slap upside the face as I gave myself. Regular chain runs over 7.5 mm total width, often approaching 8 mm. Ultra-6, according to Sutherland, is 7.2 - 7.4. It makes a difference. Having washed off all the chain lube, I'll know tomorrow when I ride off again into the sunrise.
