Reading all the postings re.Track ends vs forward ones, I have TWO Claud Butler frames, one a 1937 DSH Champ, with track, rear open ends and one 1938 Intl Roadpath with forward open ends, this also has the Claud Dural purpose rear end with the chain adjusters built on, (So on a cold winter Colorado day), I measured the inside of both ends. The track ends, rear open, have 2" movement, the forward ends have 1 1/2" movement, this is also the same on my 48 Holdswoth LaQuelda, forward ends and my 51 Bates BAR with forward ends 1/ 12" My 1950 Mercian Road path has track ends showing 2". plus I guess if you add the fact that the forward end drops the wheel a bit,(This also alters the rear brake pad location) Track ends DO have more movement. I will quote from the 1938 Claud Butler Cat, $12.00 _chuckschmidt@earthlink.net_ (mailto:chuckschmidt@earthlink.net) 'The CB Solid Path End. An important feature is the long slot incorporated in this neat solid steel (fork?) end. This allows a wide range of adjustment. enabling the track riders to obtain a greater variety of gear ratios without altering the lenght of their chain ' When racing in all the various events from road to track, I allways found the track end the best to work with, pulling the wheel back to tighten the chain, THEN tightening the chain adjusters, THEN last the lug nuts, not that it made a hill of beans (Heinzs)to me with my size and weight, 5'5" and 120lbs but I know to my mate sprinter 6' 6" 230lbs John Bradbury(NOw decesed) it SURE did. Also I dont think I ever saw Reg Harris ride a Raleigh with forward ends on the track. I am intrigued by the frame Norris has that adjust from the back, pulling the wheel forward, sounds like a Audi car add. Cheers John Crump OldpullingembackBrit, Parker, Co USA
