George.....I'm the wag, as you so eloquently put it, who used that phrase in my sign-off posted yesterday. You went on to state that the originators of that thought were crooks. Of course they were. And your point? I might be 'some CR wag', but I'm not a crook, and my guess is that there are very few crooks on the List. I am a thoughtful, considerate and reflective person. I don't pound the seller to death. The last bike I purchased from a seller on Craigslist was grateful that I gave him his asking price. I'm certain that he had no chance to get $100 for his dirty, oily, sad looking bike with rotted tires and a rattle can paint job from any one but me. He asked me to call him when I find out the make of the bike and what it's really worth. I will call him and report that the bike is worth considerably more than he sold it for. He also asked for help in finding out more about bikes, and I turned him on to the CR site.
The next bike I find at a yard sale with Stronglight cranks and Campy Der. set, I won't be fishing around in my pocket for a price guide. If my heart skips a beat and I have the coin in wallet, I'll know what to do.

Not agreed: Price guides don't make anything expensive or cheap. Public interest and demand do. They also produce a demand for some point of price reference. A bike price guide could point out that some bikes are vastly undervalued: e.g. Grandis, Somec, etc. No end of criticism is found on CR of folks paying "too much" for some bike or part. Of course, it's usually after the fact. Why don't the same guys produce a guide to prevent this overpayment? May be there is a vacuum of bike price information now because it benefits some people to keep it that way?
