You may be able to use a modern battery and (non LED) modern Bulb ( most retro bulbs are burned out). Could reduce the modern battery voltage with resistors if needed. Meticulous peeople restoring old electronic radios sometimes put modern caps inside the outer shell of the vintage one to preserve the look. Painstaking it is but it is, the best that can be done, so even the insides look right. Putting an LED in a fake retro glass bulb would be cheating : < )

Truth be told ,I am a bit better at assembling electronics than fixing my old bike. But there are a few more bike shops that like vintage bikes than vintage electronic repair shops here near DC . Later I am going to find an old bike light with a tight battery compartment. Maybe I'll use one slightly older than my bike because people could always switch an older one to their newer ride. The vintage lamps, the good ones, do seem hard to come buy. Some have the same problem as some modern ones- the battery clips are two flimsy or even downright brittle. I don't think there is much discussion of them on this list. Hillary Stone offers them for sale from time to time. I see more vintage bicycle bells than lights around; once saw a beautiful one mounted on a 60"s- 70's Gitane. If you ask the list if someone has an old Lucas or Universal or similar for sale, you will probably find some. But there are better made examples to be had.
