I just did one yesterday. I used a 5/32" chainsaw file and worked from each side of the spider/crank arm junction until the sharp edge was flattened and the crack removed. It would have been easier using a smaller file and would have less risk of scratching adjacent areas.

My questionis: if a crank has started to crack and the cracks are filed out, is it safe to continue using it? I'm assuming that if the crack and stress riser are removed the crank is safe. Is that correct?
