My apologies Jamie, I had no idea. I had actually stumbled across it on someone else's blogsite some months ago, - something about fixed gear bikes, and they were curious about who made that one. Not only was there no mention of your website, they didn't even bother to mention it was Nelson. I recognized his image and then lifted it for my files. For what it's worth, my upload today is not publicly published or listed on my photo-hosted pages, only shared now with List Members via the URL which I just posted. I'll be sure to credit you and link your page in my files. ~ Sorry!

I met Nelson Vails for just a moment in passing one day in NYC, must have been the late 70s? early 80s? I was surprised when I noticed he had a track bike, and also impressed because he was a black cyclist - which was very unusual... at least in my experience growing up in CT. He looked extremely powerful to me, and by this time I definitely was nothing less than weakling. I nodded to him. I had just bought a pair of D'Allesandro Leone tires which he saw in my hand and I immediately felt embarrassed at what he must have thought of this wimp with new tubular tires. I said he looked like he rode a lot. He mentioned that he worked as a messenger - he could ride all the time, so it was the perfect job. Some years later I was reminded of his name... after he had won a Silver Medal in the Olympics.

Perhaps Jamie or someone else can ID this TOGA rider? Sorry, No prizes for winning guesses.

But, here is another great cyclist from the early 80s worth mentioning.
