1. Clerks sometimes calculate incorrectly. No, Republicans, they do all work for the public sector, either. Box size matters very much, and some clerks do not know or perhaps pretend not to know at what size box higher rates kick in. And there are differences between carriers in what constitutes oversize.

2. Yes, your LBS may have a regular carrier and be willing to pass on to you a large part of a better shipping rate.

3. For very large framed bikes, it can be less expensive to comply with size limits. Pull the crank, and simplify packing by putting cranks, pedals, seat/ post, and bars/stem/levers in a second compact box.
