Hi Toni, In answer to your questions: "What's the reason for the two systems? Age ? Different models?" ... the answer is YES. Older sets from before and possibly during your bike's period typically had just a slotted screw, with the D-ring (what you described) as an upgrade option. We DO in fact know this,

indeed from Chuck's Timeline <http://www.velo-retro.com/tline.html>, as exc erpted here:
>

1952 - The Gran Sport Extra rear derailleur (second generation of Gran Sport) is introduced (changed body, large chromed mounting bolt and pivot b olt, holes in pulleys, extended horn shape to the outside pulley cage frame and revised cable clamp) along with the Sport single pulley rear derailleur. Th e Gran Sport down-tube shift levers are changed to single band clamp with flat-hea d screw friction adjusters, open cable without housing ("D" ring friction adjuster screw as option). Fausto Coppi wins the 1952 Giro d'Italia and Tou r de France using Gran Sport derailleurs.

Here's a slotted screw on my 1955ish Torpado: <http://www.wooljersey.com/gallery/d/138017-2/Torp55GranSport52LtBlu06.jpg>.

At some point, the slotted screws were trickled down to lower models, and had a poorer finish to them.

Hoping this isn´t too much of a daft question, here we go.

I´ve got two sorts of Campag gear levers in my box, they can be told

apart if one looks at the bolts holding the actual levers to the bands/braze on studs. One sort has a standard round slotted head, the other one has an oval wire protruding from the bolt head with the help

of which one can tension the friction disc.

What´s the reason for the two systems? Age? Different models?

Thanks for helping me once again, but I would like to get it right - this is the finishing touch for my 1957/58 Johnny Berry I think. I did

look in Chuck Schmidt´s timeline and elsewhere, to no avail.

Regards, Toni Theilmeier, Belm, Germany.
