What did those rims weigh in grams? I really don't see any intrinsic reason that steel rims would necessarily have to weigh much more than Al alloy ones. Looking at material properties, it looks to me like one could simply reduce sections commensurately without getting into "buckling issue" territory. I just figured that the people who made and bought steel rims didn't care what they weighed. Oh and did anyone ever make brake pads that actually worked on wet chromed steel? I scared myself real good a couple of times riding steel rims in the rain.
