my 2 cents

I have a 28 tooth big cog set up and have used it in with a half step freewheel to 30 teeth.

I live in a hilly area and a 42 front and 28 or 30 rear is welcome. Seems silly to drive a long way to be able to use the bike on a flatter terrain.

My consession is to use a 15 tooth small. I really don't spin a 52 x14 for very long anymore.

The 15 17 20 24 is shifts nicely and the 42 28 shifts reasonble well if careful. The front is a 42 52. I never use the 52 28 although the chain is long enough. Seat stays are 17 inches.

The 42 X 28 providis a low of 40.5

Against the everpresent wind I would use the 42 by 15 17 20 24 range. On the way back with the tail wind I shift up to the big ring.

OK OK it is not anything like Berto's gear freaking but it does allow a pleasant ride on an old friend.

On another Campagnolo equipped bike (Bottecchia) I have a front of 36 by 53 with 13 15 17 19 21 24 on the rear. (Crank and rear der is Victory, Front is N. Record) Shifts just fine and provides an identical low of 40.5. This set up however seems much easier on the working parts. I would love to find a 48 or 50 tooth big ring so that the 13 was useable (for me) on the big ring.
