Peter, You're correct about the black shorts. In fact, in addition to hiding grease stains, they covered up blood and all sorts of other fluids... But my thought about this frame is that this special fixture was used because the bike is a mixte. The sort of woman who would purchase a Singer mixte would have to be very refined - a real 16th Arrondissement lady. And we wouldn't want "Madame" to soil her fingers, would we?
