I agree with this Doug and Lou here. I would rather make a list of about 10 tiers to place bikes. Tier 1 and Tier 2 sound like "the good" and "the not so good."

As for the wine tasting, I once went to a wine tasting event (in wine country) and all I saw were a bunch of people whining about wine. I'm not joking. There were people whooshing wine around in these big gutless 1970's era wine glasses. I don't drink wine. So I had a Cherry Coke and a King-Size bag of M&M's. They must have had some rotten wine because every body kept smelling it before they took a sip. Maybe that batch was "The Grapes of Wrath" vintage 1939....

Doug, I think you answered your own question about why not many people have responded to this subject. By classifying and judging builders as first tier, second tier and the like, we impart a "better than" implication. But, as you point out, a favorite (or favourite) bike bike isn't a second class bike, it is the favorite, at least for that moment. That might mean that there are some bikes that I desire and might spend more money to own, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are first tier or second tier like some sort of classification system. We aren't grading wine afterall. They all taste good to someone. Lou Deeter, Orlando FL
