Don, your proposed lottery method is interesting and a very fair option, esp. for those who can't always be at the right place at the right time, though it sounds like more work for you. Unless you have plenty of time to cruise the internet waters like a shark, it can be frustrating. I can't tell you how many times I've been second in line--though it's been a good way to learn to get over disappointment quickly! Of course, my alternative might be to spend more time cruising through the hills and less time in the water!!!??? Ah, acquisition is a many splendored thing...

I used to design and implement email protocols way back in the 1980's. Many systems even today only transfer mail on 10 minute boundaries. Most list members poll the archive only once or twice a day because 100 mails in your mailbox is untenable. There is a time spread of at 12 hours between some senders (UK) and some receivers (Pacific) of CR mail.

When I offer multiple copies of the same item to the list, I already have a policy of 1 per customer if some people want several and the offering is oversubscribed.

Due to the vagaries of email, the next time I offer something I'm going to wait 8 or 16 hours after posting a "for sale" message, and then pick a winner randomly among the "yes" people ...
