The bottom brackets that were shown on the recent photos and that clearl y were the subject of the Rivendell calendar photo and comments are not Cha ter Leas, nor are they,, I feel pretty sure, BSA.
Oddly enough some of these same brackets are circulating in the UK at th e moment, and I have just bought a couple to add to the other three I have instock. From a dim and distant memory of "cleaning up" some of these brack ets in the 50s, prior to refining, reshaping etc, I recall that they are ei ther Brampton...very popular brand..or Davis Components.
Hobbs of Barbicon, Stallard, Hill Special, Bates and many other companie s used these bracket and lug sets. Sometimes the sets were used in the "as supplied "form, with those curious shaped points, or they were fretted and filed into more delicate designs. I have just been working today on a "HOBB S" (not a Hobbs of Barbicon - same company but before it moved to the Barbi con site), and this frame used this particular bracket...same numbers under neath.. but nicely detailed. I must remember to check tomorrow if the fairl y fancy lugs "..a la Bill Hurlow..but not Hurlow's work , he tells me.. cou ld hav e been cut from the standard lugs.
