Before finding out that bubbles in a punctured tubular follow the path of least resistance to exit at the valve stem, and before learning the trick of

clamping off a tire in sections to find out exactly where the puncture was, I wasted a lot of time and thread by completely removing the tube from a sewup tire, then sewing the whole damned thing up again after patching it.
