Wrong. It is exactly the other way. A pipe that is pressured from both sides will carry a far greater strain/load than a rod. Check out your shower curtain holder, for example.

Back to the QR: New technology is always ogled at suspiciously, so might that have been a reason for the long introduction of the qr. Don´t forget, news took a long time to travel back then, as well.
