Subject: [CR]The World of Campy or Is My Headset Original

So I've sorta been a 'champion of the underdog' kinda bike guy. Going for more obscure or lesser lauded components. Trying my best to stay away from the 'Big Two', Campy and Shimano.

But the Campy thing has finally taken me over and I am starting to dive into that (expensive) world. The thing is, while I can tell you about all those other little brands, but, it turns out that I know nothing about Campy.

So I recently picked up a steel headset for a descent price. Maybe late 70's/early 80's (but then again...), when I got it, the top locknut is alloy and the rest is steel. Was there any occasion where a headset would be sold like this? Or was the alloy part added later?

I'm guessing the later is the case, but please fill me in. And if so, I'm in the market for a headset locknut in steel, italian thread.

Thanks.
