Wow, I can add nothing to Matt Gorski's excellent description of Maillard (which offered Atom hubs starting in the 1940's, and Normandy starting in the 1950's).

I _can_ say that hubs labeled Atom were usually small flange (as found on many schwinn 3 and 5 speeds), and the ones labeled Normandy were usually large flange. Also, most flat QRs for normandy hubs say "ATOM" on one side and "MAILLARD" on the other, talk about covering all of your bases !!

Ron Kitching's house brand was "Milremo", not "Maillard". However, I am virtually certain that he offered Normandy Sport (High Flange) hubs as a Milremo product, as I've seen that hub labeled Milremo on ebay several times. Also Lambert/Viscount hubs seem to be Normandy Sport.

I have also seen Normandy freewheels, which I find to be one of the most unusual of the 6 possible combo's of labelings on these parts :

Normandy Hubs (common) Atom Hubs (common) Maillard Hubs (common)

Atom Freewheels (common) Maillard Freewheels (common) Normandy Freewheels (rare)

We went through a whole series of messages about Pellissier / ExcelTo hubs about 9-12 months ago. The first step to learning about these hubs is to learn how to spell "Pellissier".

I have both Maillard 700 hubs and Pellissier HF 70's hubs. They look the same but they are made by completely different manufacturers, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the Maillard 700's were Pellissier copies.
