A listmember posted about the possibility of switching quick release skewer levers on different bodies, sometimes bodies of different makes. I am no expert but I rank this practice along with kids who used to play around with fireworks or experiment using whole nutmeg as a hallucinagen. It might work out ok but I wouldn't try it. I have taken apart some quick releases and the tapers do seem to be a little different, sometimes very different. Campy qr uses a spring in the head which I guess is there for an extra safety margin. Some French qr's have the cam on the side which acts against the housing body and not against the piston part. There has been a whole hullaballoo in the news recently about the dangers of perfectly good quick releases, and NJ, I believe is moving to ban the sale of bikes that don't have some new quick release locking feature different from the lawyer lips that appeared in the last decade. The quick release is safe however for years of service if it is not tampered with and if used correctly so that substantial pressure is felt in the palm when closing. As with most things, if they are in the proper hands they are perfectly safe. In the wrong hands of kids or ham handed adults, they are an accident waiting to happen.
