Subject: [CR]enough bite to my nuts?

I have a frame with a 126mm rear spread, and want to use a bolt-on hub with a 118mm OLD.
I know it is not original equipment, but ... For various reasons, I'm thinking of putting spacers on the axle instead of closing down the rear. The question is, how much does the axle need to stick out to allow the nut enough of a grip? I've been told by a machinist (in different circumstances) that as long as the nut turns 3 complete turns... But I'd love to hear what you think. Is 4mm enough with 1mm pitch threads?
