Subject: [CR]RALEIGH TEAM PRO 753 FOR SALE

Dear List,

Here, for your buying pleasure , is a vintage late 1970’s Raleigh 753 Team Pro Bicycle.

The frame measures 54.5cm (21 ½ in.) seat tube ctr. to ctr. with a 55.5 (21 ¾ in.) top tube ctr. to ctr.

This is a very beautiful one owner bicycle that has next to no miles as is evidenced by her condition. She was stored for many, many years and has only just recently been removed from “Aladdin’s Cave” here in Southern California. Every thing is original as when the first owner had her when he owned her. I believe he had her repainted in the UK when he was stationed therewhile serving the U.S. Army.

Raleigh bicycles have a particular place in the hearts of vintage cycling buffs, especially those of us who were first introduced to lightweights in the 1970s. I fit into that category. A Raleigh Pro was my first good bicycle.

The Raleigh Team Pro 753 was the top of the line model in the late 1970’s; pure race geometry and refined workmanship were her hallmarks. She was the no holds barred handcrafted racing model which appeared to be made by different "hands”; those of the absolute master craftsman! In fact, she is an “Ilkeston” built frame!

Please take a look at:

According to Mike Mullett of the UK, who worked for Raleigh at the time:

“Bottom Bracket shell, Ilkeston. A milling machine was set up to gang

mill the 4 slots.

Seat Bolt, definitely Ilkeston. These were threaded 8mm with very shallow heads left proud of the seat lug ears. I believe Ilkeston was the only builder to use these

Rear Brake Bridge - Ilkeston

Frame Number SB 1015 and the size of the figures matches the number stamps used, plus the size stamp 56 - Ilkeston.

Wagner crown used at Ilkeston , but a lot of builders used these

Chain Stay Bridge - Ilkeston. Usually cut from the top of a seat stay.

Drilled ends - Ilkeston. Incidentally the drillings adjacent to the rear adjustors were "blind" and very shallow so as not to weaken the ends.

The finish as someone remarked (can't remember who) very much C&G of Liverpool. The gold lining of the eyes very much a trademark of theirs.

Oversize seat stay caps may have been filed flush. BUT no holes in the head tube where the Heron badge was fitted which leads me to believe they were filled on on refinishing.

Final opinion - An Ilkeston Frame which has been refinished”

Mike did later add this caveat:

“I reckon john P's bike is 531 despite the 753 transfer. 27.2 seat post gives it away, and to the best of my knowledge 753 & 531 MAIN frames tubes were never mixed, I stress MAIN frame tubes.”

I have asked further on this subject of manyand have gotten mixed opinions. I guess the only way to know is to have a metallurgy test done.

This is a very nice fully rideable vintage road bicycle of impeccable workmanship. She has been repainted and would look absolutely stunning refinished in her original livery. This Raleigh Team Pro is one of only a few very special Team Pro models that made their way to this side of the Atlantic. She is a wonderful chance for the discriminating collector to add a true piece of cycling history to their collection.
