Scott, A quick answer is ...NO! Your bike is a 1980-1981 due to the stamped/engraved 'Colnago' in the seat-stay caps. It is something of a 'tweener' as the chainstays aren't stamped Colnago as well. The parts mix is all over the place and isn't a reliable indicator. I have had and seen several 1979 models none of which had the seaststay caps engraved w/ Colnago. I have an otherwise identical frame (Sarroni painted) Super from 1981.

I don't doubt Matt's Colnago savvy for a split second. But I've been all over the archives on this one. There are a number of posts from reliable folks to the effect that the fluted caps with the "Colnago" stamp did not appear until 1980. A number of people mention owning '79 Colnagos that have plain fluted caps. But there is also some contradictory info, and this question does not appear to have been definitively cleared up unless I have missed the thread where this occurred. eRichie in one posting states that he has catalogs from his first trip to Italy in 1979 that show the engraved caps. Brian Blum states that he owned a '78 or '79 frame purchased from Mike Kone that had the engraved caps. Mark Boral writes about Colnago owners reporting pre-1980 Colnagos that had the engraved caps and states that some, but not all, late 70's Colnagos may have had them. So has this issue been cleared up, leaving some archive flotsam/jetsam bobbing in its wake? Or is this still somewhat of an open question?
