There are at least two variations of the Atom splined FW, one with smaller diameter splines and one with larger diameter. The Phil Wood and other thin wall removers fit the smaller one. These are a great help, as it is a very close fit to remove the smaller splined Atom over the hub locknuts on many makes and models of hubs. However, at least some variations of the Normandy Competition hub have particularly large locknuts,, and once you run on a small splined Atom you cannot remove it without first remaving the hub locknut, even with a thin walled Phil. Recently had this situation with a Raleigh Competition Mk II. Fortunately I was aware of the potential problem and did no run the FW on far enough that a tool was required to remove it. When I confirmed it was not going to work, I was able to remove it by hand. And thanks to my hoarding tendencies, I had another otherwise identical Atom with the larger splines.

Interesting. I've never owned a Phil hub, but for the last 25+years I've used a Phil "Atom" remover to remove Atom, Regina, and Zeus freewheels from all kinds of hubs without any problems. Are you sure you had yours inserted fully?

BTW, the Phil tool is simply a copy of the Zeus tool, which was harder to obtain in North America.
