Yes, the gun was to ward off chasing dogs. The more humane riders of that period used lemon juice. I have seen several of these "Guns" and some are pretty convincing while others are just a squeeze bulb. There was a lot of strange items that came to fruition during the bicycle boom just before the turn of the century. One such item was a skirt lifter. The name alone allows the imagination to run wild.
