Subject: [CR]addendum: Stronglight model 54 / 55 three pin cottered cranksets

I noted that the "Standard" Stronglight three-pin cottered steel crankset is Model 54, and the "Competition" Stronglight three-pin cottered steel crankset is Model 55. For those interested and for the CR Archives, here's some more information. The 1963 Ron Kitching catalogue (available from Chuck Schmidt via his Velo Retro site) describes these models as follows:

Type 54 "Standard" light section. GCC. 6 1/4" (170) approx

Type 55 "Competition" square fluted. Semi-GCC. 6 1/2" (165), 6 1/4" (170), 7" (175) approx

GCC means Gear Case Clearance, which indicates the distance between the crankarm and outer chainring for use with a mounted chainring and chain enclosure.

Not knowing how to visually identify a "light section" "Standard" Model 54 crankarm on sight, I assume it isn't fluted since the "Competition" Model 55 is noted as being fluted. I assume those stamped "Competition" on the crankarm in addition to the presence of fluting are Model 55.
