I agree with Mike Waite. I ALLWAYS rode and raced on a single fixed. UNLESS a mass start race (BLRC) in a park or on a aerodrome, then I would use a Cyclo or Simplex 3sp. I left Brum in 1957 and I do know at that time gears in use a lot more. To this day, I still at times use a single fixed. even up the bloody hills (AND DOWN EM) around this part of the country. I do think that using a low single fixed over the years has helped to avoid any KNEE problems, has NOT helped ALL the other problems though! Anyone have a cure for OLD age!. To see a bike with kit all dressed up to go racing, go to CR LeCirque 2006 look at Best Brit Bike, My 50 Mercian with Sprints, bag, guards etc. No tossing the bike in the back of a pick up in those days.
