I can only guess about the Russian ones, but I have 2 of the US team bikes from the early 80's Mine have needle bearings, with plastic washers for thrust bearings, and it's all held together by an allen bolt down inside the headset on one, and on another, the allen bolt holds the handlebars on as well.

I wouldn't mind getting hold of a Takhion to go with them, or even one of the Masi funny bikes the USSR team used in the 1983 worlds.
