Subject: [CR]Cartridge bearing binding when freewheel tightened

I have recently acquired a 1982 Trek 728 with Sansin hubs and catridge bearings. I replaced the rim on the rear wheel and when I put the freewheel back on finger tight, the bearings were fine (not as good as cup and cone, but fine.) However, when the freewheeel tightened upon riding, the bearings were binding in multiple spots. It felt like they were indexed. I replaced the bearings and the problem is better, but still there. Does anyone have any ideas? Could I shim out the freewheel so that it is in the same position relative to the bearing as it is when finger tight? If so, where can I get shims?

Thanks for any suggestions.
