That is a great point by Charles in that in wet conditions, it is the oil residue from the automobile that floats to the top causing slickness, and that may be mistaken for hydroplaning in bicycles.

I do think a nice tread pattern makes a tire look more vintage, but those Conti Ultra Gatorskins I have on my Redcay just look plain weird.
