There's tire clearance, and then there's tire clearance as when trying to remove a wheel with fat tire and narrow rim.

Most caliper brakes offer limited QR opening while canti's are almost limitless if the brazed studs are placed with normal spacing.

Oversized calipers would also seem to become relatively heavy and/or flexy at some point versus canti's.
